About Base64

Free Base64 decoder and encoder for text and files, with Base64URL, data: URIs and MIME line wrapping. Nothing is uploaded: it all runs in your browser.

Base64 writes any data, including images and other binary files, using only 64 safe characters: letters, digits and two symbols. Every 3 bytes become 4 characters, so the encoded form is about a third larger than the original. It is used for email attachments, data: URIs, HTTP Basic authentication and many APIs.

Standard or URL-safe?

Standard Base64 uses + and /, which have special meanings in URLs. URL-safe Base64 (also called Base64URL) uses - and _ instead, and usually omits the = padding. JSON Web Tokens use Base64URL. When decoding, this tool works out which alphabet the input uses.

Base64 is not encryption

Anyone can decode Base64. It changes how data is written, not who can read it, so never use it to hide passwords or keys.

Why does decoding show hex?

If the decoded bytes are not valid UTF-8 text (an image or a compressed file, for example), showing them as text would be meaningless. The tool shows a hex preview instead, and lets you download the bytes.
