What is URL encoding?

Free URL encoder and decoder. Percent-encode or decode URLs and query strings, with a full-URI mode and a parameter editor. Nothing leaves your browser.

URLs may only contain a limited set of characters. Everything else, including spaces, accented letters and emoji, must be written as % followed by two hexadecimal digits for each byte of its UTF-8 form. For example, a space becomes %20 and é becomes %C3%A9.

Component or Full URI?

Use Component for a single piece of a URL, such as one query value: it encodes structural characters like & and = so they cannot be misread. Use Full URI for a whole address: it keeps /, ?, & and = intact and leaves existing escapes alone, so encoding twice changes nothing.

Why is a space sometimes + and sometimes %20?

+ means a space only inside form-encoded query strings. In a path it is a literal plus. This tool applies form encoding to the query part only.
